Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI) is now offering FREE DVD & Discussion Kits of its film, “Asian American Voices: Shaping Silicon Valley, Strengthening Community, Sharing Hope,” to individuals and groups interested in hosting a film discussion with their peers, colleagues, or community. What is the "Asian American Voices" film about?
Winner of the 2010 CreaTiVe Award from CreaTV San Jose, this 18-minute film follows the stories—the successes, hardships, and hopes—of three Asian American immigrants in Silicon Valley. Despite language, cultural, and health care barriers, these individuals readily work to shape the local community. For a region that has thrived on the ideas and labor of immigrants past and present, supporting these populations remains vital toward improving the social and economic health of Silicon Valley.
How will my group benefit from the film and discussion?
As much of our country’s economic strength relies on the contributions of Asian American and other immigrant groups, our continued prosperity depends on the successful integration of immigrant newcomers into our communities. Hosting an “Asian American Voices” film discussion is a unique opportunity to promote cross-cultural understanding and action in your community. By providing the space to share personal experiences related to culture and immigration, the film discussion puts a human face on the opportunities and challenges related to immigration and forges greater understanding and increased cooperation among our diverse population. Through participation in these guided discussions, most participants report greater understanding of immigrant experiences, issues, contributions, and supportive action, as well as strengthened commitment to welcoming immigrant newcomers. How can I receive a FREE DVD and host a discussion?
AACI is offering FREE DVD & Discussion Kits to individuals or groups committed to hosting a film discussion for 10 or more people. Along with the DVD, the kit includes a dialogue and discussion guide with audience-tailored questions, as well as information, supplemental resources, and action steps that your group can take to support immigrant communities. In return for the DVD & Discussion Kit, recipients agree to complete their discussion and return host/participant surveys within three months of receiving the kit. Recipients also pledge to make a $20 donation if surveys are not returned within this time. To request your FREE DVD & Discussion Kit, please submit the REQUEST FORM. The film may be PREVIEWED HERE online ahead of time.
How are discussion groups connected to larger community efforts?
This DVD & Discussion Kit program is a component of the AACI Silicon Valley Asian American Voices project, which works to deepen understanding of immigrant experiences and contributions, bridge relationships between diverse communities, and empower people with the resources to promote immigrant integration. Voices is one of several programs funded by Silicon Valley Community Foundation under its Bridging the Cultural Gap grant program. Together, Bridging the Cultural Gap grantees work to help immigrants and U.S.-born residents find common ground in order to build integrated, cohesive communities that honor our shared values of family, hard work, and opportunity for all.
